BARE International Review: Is the Shop Worth the Trip?
A mystery shop is more than a store visit. BARE assignments can include a detailed brief, required purchases, evidence and a report. The fee only makes sense once you account for the whole job.
Researched review. I haven’t personally used BARE International. This assessment draws on the official information and attributed reports linked below.
Careful evaluators who can fit suitable assignments into local travel.
Reimbursement is not profit. Reporting and payment fees can change the return.
A real evaluator program
The relevant route is BARE’s evaluator program, separate from employee hiring. BARE’s official evaluator FAQ describes independent contractors gathering customer-experience information and says registration is free. It also warns that unsolicited prepayment or cashier’s checks purportedly sent by BARE are signs of impersonation.
That makes the practical legitimacy check fairly specific: verify the assignment in the official account and confirm the actual scheduler before spending money. The existence of a real BARE company does not authenticate a message using its name. A genuine assignment has a defined brief, fee, deadline, and reporting process; a vague promise to send you a large check is not equivalent.
This is also not paid shopping in the sense of keeping every purchase as free merchandise. Some assignments include a purchase reimbursement and some do not. The activity you are selling is accurate evaluation and an accepted report, not your willingness to buy something.
Choose the right application route
| Route | What the current official guidance says | What it means for a new evaluator |
|---|---|---|
| Apollo | Browser-based registration and opportunity selection. | A starting point for the evaluator profile and available assignments. |
| iSecretShop | An app route currently described for the US, US territories, and Canada. | Do not assume the app covers every country where BARE operates. |
| Shopmetrics / Insights | Access is described through active Apollo evaluators rather than direct signup. | Avoid creating unrelated profiles to solve an access problem; use BARE’s instructions. |
The current registration page describes several connected systems, so a single old app walkthrough may no longer match the entire setup. Read the instructions attached to the route you use. A job visible in one system should not be assumed to be assigned to you in another.
An application is not permission to perform a shop. Wait for an allocation or confirmation and check the date window. Traveling first and asking for the assignment afterward risks doing work the client did not commission. The sensible first assignment is one you can complete without a complicated journey or a large purchase.
The report is part of the job
A useful way to read the assignment is in three stages: what you must do at the location, what you must remember or document, and what you must submit afterward. Your own interpretation of a good customer-service experience does not replace the client’s scenario. If the brief requires a specific department, interaction, or purchase, an otherwise detailed visit can still miss the deliverable.
BARE says report quality, timeliness, completeness, responsiveness, and grammar affect evaluator selection and compensation. Those criteria explain why reporting is part of the work rather than optional administration. An editor’s follow-up can require additional time even after you have left the store. Evaluator standards and allocation FAQ.
Before accepting, resolve anything ambiguous about the shop window, location, receipt, photographs, employee details, or prohibited behavior. Do not assume you can reconstruct precise timing or wording hours later. Plan a discreet way to preserve permitted notes and submit while the visit is fresh, following the assignment’s confidentiality rules.
There is no universal “ten-minute shop” duration established here. A short visit followed by a long journey and narrative report can be a poor use of an afternoon. That is the main difference from browsing nearby photo jobs: the reporting burden can determine the real cost.
Separate the fee from reimbursement
The fee is compensation for the evaluation. Reimbursement is repayment of an approved expense, usually within a stated cap. BARE’s FAQ says project fees and reimbursement limits appear in the listing and vary by scope and region. It does not establish a typical hourly rate.
Consider a hypothetical assignment with an $18 fee and up to $20 in approved purchase reimbursement. If the purchase costs $22, you have $2 of unreimbursed spending before considering travel. Receiving $38 would not mean earning $38: $20 replaces the purchase cost, and the extra $2 still reduces the fee’s value. This is an illustration, not a BARE listing or observed result.
That separation matters when comparing a shop with a remote task. A reimbursed meal can be useful if you would have bought it anyway, but it is not the same as unrestricted cash. Do not accept a shop purely because the combined fee-and-reimbursement number looks larger than another platform’s reward.
For a local route, assess the incremental cost: additional miles, parking, time waiting, reporting, and the chance that one delayed visit makes another deadline impossible. Combining shops only helps if every assignment’s rules and schedule remain feasible.
What reaches your account?
The US/Canada guidance points evaluators to Tipalti. Its setup requires payment details and applicable tax forms; the invitation is tied to accepted program conditions and an assigned opportunity. An evaluator account without completed payment onboarding is not the same as being ready to receive money. Tipalti setup and fee schedule.
| Published method example | Listed charge | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| US local bank transfer | Free in the current BARE fee table. | Potentially preferable to a fee-bearing method for small assignments. |
| PayPal | A $3 transaction fee plus a transmission fee; the table gives separate US and non-US limits. | A small shop fee can lose a meaningful share before you receive it. |
| Paper check | $3 per transaction in the current table. | Do not assume a physical check avoids payout costs. |
These are published examples, not a promise that every method is available in your region. Confirm the exact deduction and currency in your payment setup. The evaluator FAQ separately describes end-of-following-month arrangements for some non-US regions; do not apply that schedule to every account.
If payment is missing, first distinguish a report still awaiting acceptance from an accepted report awaiting its payment cycle. Check your payment details and the assignment reference, then contact the project’s official support or scheduler. BARE’s evaluator FAQ gives a 90-day problem-reporting window from the payment date. Keep the payment notification so an inquiry identifies the actual shop and amount.
Favor a sensible local assignment
Potential advantage
You can assess a specific fee and required visit before committing, rather than work through open-ended online screening.
The hidden workload
Travel, detailed narrative, evidence, editing queries, and payment fees may exceed the apparent effort of the visit.
The best first check
One clearly assigned, nearby shop with understandable expenses provides better evidence than a full day planned around untested assumptions.
Compare Field Agent for another local assignment format and IVueIt for photo-based work. They are alternatives to compare, not interchangeable assignments. Read what each pays for and how an acceptable submission is defined.
BARE’s credibility is sufficient to justify investigating its actual job board. The evidence here is not sufficient to promise an earnings range or recommend taking every available shop. Our editorial judgment is to choose the assignment on its own economics, particularly if purchases must be fronted or a payment method carries a fee.
Three steps before you commit more time.
Register as an evaluator
Use the official route and follow the application and training requirements.
Read the whole assignment
Confirm the fee, purchase limits, evidence and deadline before accepting.
Visit and report
Follow the scenario, keep the required evidence and submit the report on time.
BARE International FAQ
Do I pay to register as a BARE evaluator?
BARE’s FAQ says evaluator registration is free. Use the official route and be cautious of messages demanding registration money.
Can I perform a shop as soon as I apply for it?
Wait for confirmation or allocation. An expression of interest is not an assigned shop.
Are purchase reimbursements profit?
They replace approved spending. Separate them from the fee, and account for any amount above the reimbursement limit.
Does BARE pay everyone on the same schedule?
No universal schedule is established here. Regional arrangements, report acceptance, and payment setup matter.
Have I personally tested BARE?
No. This review is based on official evaluator information and editorial analysis.
What this review is based on.
I haven’t personally tested BARE International. Official policies, attributed participant reports and my analysis are distinguished in the review. Calculations are illustrative, not earnings forecasts. Requirements and availability can change.

Compare the work, not just the rewards.
A credible evaluator program—if the assignment economics work.
I would investigate BARE for local assignments that fit travel you already do. Clear fees and reimbursement limits let you evaluate a shop before accepting it, but reporting and payment costs still matter. Favor manageable assignments with a clear brief. I haven’t personally completed a BARE shop; this recommendation is based on the published evaluator process.
