The market has changed

AI has added pressure. Paid writing has not disappeared.

The old promise that anyone can sign up and earn steadily by producing generic articles deserves more scrutiny now. Research on one major freelance marketplace found a 21% relative decline in automation-prone writing and coding job postings during the eight months after ChatGPT’s introduction, compared with more manual work. That is evidence of pressure in a studied market, not a count of writing platforms that have closed or a forecast for every writer.

A practical response is to make your offer specific: researched articles in a field you know, interviews and case studies, copy built around a product brief, or scripts with a defined audience. The current platforms below still provide writing-work routes, but finding suitable clients and demonstrating relevant ability remain part of the job.

Writing for a client

Complete an agreed deliverable with defined requirements, payment terms, and revisions. This is the main focus of this directory.

Publishing for an audience

Blogs, newsletters, and books can earn money through readers or sales, but publishing a piece does not guarantee payment. That is a different business model.

AI evaluation work

Rating or rewriting model responses can use writing skills, but it is an annotation or evaluation assignment. Compare it separately from client writing work.

Places to find real writing work

Six platforms and job sources worth comparing.

Each works differently. A job board connects you with an advertiser, while a marketplace or content network may manage assignments and payment.

Client marketplace

Upwork

Upwork has a current writing jobs section covering client-posted projects. Look for articles, copywriting, scripts, editing, or ghostwriting that match the samples you can show.

How you find work: Build a focused profile, review client briefs, and submit relevant proposals. Many applications use Connects, so include proposal costs in your plan.

Pay and fees: Contracts can be hourly or fixed-price. Upwork’s current freelancer service fee ranges from 0% to 15% per contract; check the fee displayed before accepting.

Service marketplace

Fiverr

Fiverr lets freelancers offer defined services. For writing, make the deliverable concrete: a landing page, a researched article, a script, or an editing package with clear limits.

How you find work: Create a service listing with relevant samples and scope. Define length, research, delivery time, and included revisions so clients can compare the offer.

Pay and fees: Fiverr’s payment terms credit sellers with 80% of successfully completed order value. Include its share and the full production time when setting a price.

Vetted content network

Contently

Contently maintains a talent network and contributor application route. Its current network emphasizes portfolios, subject expertise, and credentials relevant to the work.

How you find work: Apply with a portfolio that demonstrates the industries and formats you can handle. Follow the current submission, review, and onboarding requirements.

Best starting point: Writers with a credible body of work and a clear specialty. Joining the network is different from being assigned a client project.

ClearVoice

ClearVoice operates a vetted freelance talent network for brand content. Its official guidance describes creating a CV Portfolio and applying for review before receiving network assignments or pitch requests.

How you find work: Show relevant samples and explicit areas of expertise. Its writer guidance calls for at least six samples, including published work, plus identity verification.

Best starting point: Writers who can demonstrate a specific industry or content specialty. Check the current portfolio workflow and assignment terms; approval does not promise a workload.

Content assignment platform

Textbroker

Textbroker has a current author registration route for original business content. Its author page describes assignments for writers who can research, follow briefs, and adapt to brand voice.

How you find work: Complete the author review process and check which assignments are available to an approved account. Confirm eligibility and the current rate for each order.

Important policy: Textbroker says AI-generated writing is not accepted for author assignments. A live registration page does not establish how much suitable work will be available.

Writing job board

ProBlogger Jobs

ProBlogger maintains a current job board with writing-related listings. The board includes categories such as articles, scripts, and ghostwriting, with freelance and other engagement types.

How you find work: Review the advertiser’s brief and apply through the listed process. Tailor your samples to the topic rather than sending the same general pitch everywhere.

Payment model: It is a job source, not a promise that ProBlogger will pay you. Confirm the client’s identity, scope, budget, revisions, and payment terms directly.

Choose the right route

Compare how you get from a profile to paid work.

Make your application effort match the platform’s model. A portfolio network needs different preparation from a direct job application.

Source Model How you pursue work Check first
Upwork Client marketplace Proposals for posted projects Connects, contract fee, and funded scope
Fiverr Service marketplace Defined service listings and orders 20% seller share deduction and revision limits
Contently Vetted talent network Portfolio application and client matching Relevant clips, credentials, and actual assignment terms
ClearVoice Vetted content network CV Portfolio review and project matching Samples, subject expertise, and current onboarding
Textbroker Content assignment platform Author approval and eligible orders Available work, order rate, human-writing policy

Make your offer specific

Sell a useful deliverable, supported by relevant samples.

A client should be able to tell what you can produce and why you can produce it well. “I write anything” leaves that work to the buyer. A profile focused on B2B case studies, software explainers, product launch copy, or research-based scripts gives them something concrete to assess.

If you lack paid clips, create a few clearly labeled portfolio samples in the niche you want to pursue. Show the research, structure, and judgment the work requires. Use work you own or have permission to display, and explain your actual contribution to collaborative projects.

Articles and specialist content

Demonstrate research, clear explanations, and familiarity with the subject. Relevant examples matter more than a large collection of unrelated clips.

Copywriting and brand work

Show how you adapt to a product, audience, offer, and voice. Define whether strategy and research are included in the writing price.

Scripts and ghostwriting

Use samples that show pacing, structure, or sustained voice. Agree on outlines, milestones, authorship, and revisions before a long project begins.

Look at the full project

A per-word rate does not tell you the hourly return.

Include interviews, research, drafting, fact-checking, revisions, and client communication when estimating a quote.

Calculate the working rate

Illustrative example: a $150 article that takes five hours produces $30 per hour before platform fees and other costs. At eight hours, the same fee produces $18.75 per hour.

Define the revision scope

Agree on the deliverable, length, research needs, included revision rounds, and deadline. Clarify what happens if the client changes the brief after you start.

Count client acquisition

Track unpaid proposals, application time, and any proposal charges alongside completed work. A promising posted budget does not mean your time spent pitching will pay off.

Check rights and AI expectations before writing.

Confirm ownership, byline, confidentiality, portfolio permission, and whether AI assistance is allowed. Keep your process consistent with the agreement. If a client requests a substantial custom sample, discuss a paid test with a clear scope.

Before you start

Freelance writing questions.

Understand the work model before investing time in profiles or proposals.

Are there still real platforms paying writers?

Yes. The sources above include current marketplaces, content networks, an author assignment platform, and a job board. What varies is how you qualify, find clients, and get paid. None promises a steady stream of suitable work to every applicant.

Has AI reduced writing opportunities?

There is evidence of reduced demand in parts of the online freelance market. The study linked above measured a relative decline in automation-prone writing and coding postings on one platform after ChatGPT arrived. It does not establish that all writing categories or platforms declined equally.

Can beginners get started?

You can build samples and apply where you meet the requirements, but avoid expecting immediate assignments. Vetted networks may require published clips or substantial experience. A narrow service and a few relevant samples are a more useful starting point than a generic profile.

Where does creative writing fit?

Look for actual scriptwriting, ghostwriting, book, or narrative briefs through marketplaces and job boards. Read the scope and rights carefully. This directory does not promise a queue of paid fiction prompts or poetry assignments.

Can I use AI to write client content?

Only within the client’s and platform’s rules. Textbroker expressly prohibits AI-generated author submissions. For other projects, confirm the policy rather than assuming editing an AI draft is permitted.

Is a writing job board a payment platform?

No. A board can publish opportunities while the advertiser handles hiring and payment. Confirm the agreement directly. A marketplace may offer its own payment processes, but you still need to follow its rules and read the contract.
