The time-travel detour

Before the AI tasks,
there were the tiny tasks.

The tools changed. The question stuck around: what can a person do that someone else is willing to pay for? Three landmarks help explain how we got here.

The microtask experiment

Amazon announced Mechanical Turk on November 2. The premise was memorable: software could ask people to do things computers struggled with, such as identifying objects in photographs.

The digital service shelf

Fiverr was founded in 2010. Its marketplace made defined digital services something a customer could browse and buy. A skill could become a listing, with its own scope and price.

A new conversation

OpenAI introduced ChatGPT on November 30. The launch is a useful landmark for today’s AI-work district, where human feedback and evaluation feature in many platform reviews.

A useful roadside experiment

The payout is only
half the story.

A $30 assignment sounds different when it takes an hour of work plus half an hour of screening and waiting. Include both, and your effective rate is $20 an hour before expenses.

Use this little calculator to compare a whole session. Change the numbers to include applications, setup, waiting, and direct expenses. The result is before tax.

Effective session rate
After expenses, before tax
$20.00/hr

(Payout − expenses) ÷ total hours. A planning example, not a platform earnings estimate.
